2 landmark bills to go before Sarawak assembly

The Sarawak state assembly will meet from Monday to Nov 29.

KUCHING: Two groundbreaking bills will be tabled in Monday’s sitting of the Sarawak assembly, speaker Asfia Awang Nassar said.

He said the Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023 and the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Emission) Bill 2023 are among five bills to be tabled during the eight-day meeting.

“Both bills, on the ombudsman and the environment, are the first in Malaysia. No one has done it,” he told reporters after attending a meeting to prepare for the assembly, chaired by Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg, today.

Asfia said Abang Johari will also be tabling the state’s 2024 budget under the Supply (2024) Bill on Monday.

He said there will be no limit to the number of assemblymen debating the ombudsman and environment bills as there is no such legislation in the country yet.

He said two other bills that will be tabled are the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill 2023 and the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2023.

In addition, a total of 222 oral questions and 100 written questions have been received for the meeting, which ends on Nov 29.

Iskandar Turkee, who won the Jepak seat in a by-election earlier this month, will also take his oath of office.

Asfia said deputy premier Douglas Uggah Embas will table a motion to withdraw funds from the state consolidated fund to be transferred to the newly formed Sarawak sovereign wealth fund.

He said Bawang Assan assemblyman Wong Soon Koh, who is the Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president, is no longer the opposition leader after he announced that PSB is supporting the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition. - FMT
