Govt uncertain of MPs within own bloc, claims Bersatu man

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the party will work to ensure no more of its MPs support the unity government.

PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu leader claims the government is not assured of the support of MPs within its own bloc amid reports that at least four more Bersatu MPs are set to declare support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal claimed there was a concerted effort to woo MPs from his party into defecting and that this was because the government was not confident of its existing support.

He said Bersatu will work to ensure no more of its MPs pledge their support to Anwar, adding: “But we shall see later.”

“Such scheming will always be there because the current government itself is not assured of support from their MPs within their bloc. So, in order to weaken the opposition, they have to continue doing this.

“It’s not surprising that they’re playing a psywar (psychological warfare) with us, claiming more (MPs) are going to support the unity government,” he told FMT.

The Machang MP was commenting on a report by Sin Chew Daily that four to five more Bersatu MPs will be declaring their support for Anwar.

It quoted a source as saying the MPs will be from Kedah, Perak and Terengganu.

So far, five Bersatu MPs have declared their support for Anwar without quitting their party, saying it was for the sake of their constituents.

They are Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli) and Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang).

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously said he anticipated more opposition MPs to announce their support for the prime minister. He said their support should be accepted in good faith.

Earlier this month, Anwar said he played no part in the decision by Bersatu MPs to pledge support for his administration. - FMT
