A hop by any other name - Umno Youth chief slams 'political frogs'

Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has lambasted opposition lawmakers over their declaration of support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“Enough with the political drama before this, the people are tired and fed-up.

“The Anti-Hopping Law came about with the aim of preventing political frogs from hopping about as they liked so that there would be no protracted political dramas and elected representatives could focus on serving the people who voted for them and the party they represent.

“But it seems like despite the passing of the Anti-Hopping Law, these frogs continue to hop using a different name - which is to support the government without exiting their party.

“Although the term used is different, the aim of these frogs is the same, which is to hop,” Akmal (above) said in a Facebook post.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Jeli MP Zahari Kechik became the fourth Bersatu lawmaker to declare support for Anwar.

Similar to the three before him, he cited the well-being of his constituents as the reason for doing so.

The other Bersatu MPs who have taken a similar stance are Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).

Bersatu has since suspended the membership of Suhaili and Iskandar.

‘Evaluate those who hop’

Meanwhile, Akmal, who is also the Jasin Umno chief, hoped that Anwar would scrutinise the support of these opposition lawmakers.

“I ask PMX (Anwar) to re-evaluate the support of those who hop so that the agenda to reform Parliament proceeds well and achieves its original objective.

“This is the time to focus on helping the people,” he added.

Previously, Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the coalition is in the process of gathering information before lodging a police report on the claim that the MPs were coerced into supporting Anwar.

Meanwhile, Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan claimed that money politics is becoming rampant and accused the prime minister of being the source. - Mkini
