Penang’s opposition chief today expressed hope that aspects of Malay Islamic heritage would not be left out of state development plans and proposed that the Malay settlement in Batu Uban be designated as a heritage area.
Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff (Perikatan Nasional-Sungai Dua) said the settlement had existed more than 50 years before the arrival of Francis Light.
“This is proven by the existence of the Batu Uban mosque, built in 1734 by Nakhoda Nan Intan or Muhammad Saleh.
“I propose that the state government designate the Batu Uban settlement area around the mosque as a heritage area and declare the mosque as a heritage building,” Fauzi (above) said when debating the speech by Governor Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak at the state legislative assembly sitting.
He said the mosque is an important heritage building and evidence of the early history of the Islamic community in Penang, and as such, its heritage should be preserved.
“The same goes with the remaining Malay villages in this state. Do not neglect them and assume that these villages have no value,” he said.
The sitting continues tomorrow.
