PETALING JAYA: Muda raised up to RM1.1 million for its campaign for the six state elections held in August, says its president, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
Syed Saddiq said the party’s initial goal was to raise RM1.5 million. Of the RM1.1 million collected, he said, the party only used RM858,252 for its campaign.
“The reason not all of the funds were used is that most of them came in at the last minute, and we knew it would not be wise to spend at the last minute for a seat,” he told a press conference here today.
The Muar MP said the rest of the funds will be used for any upcoming elections that the party will contest in.
Syed Saddiq said the party spent an average of RM45,000 on each seat, adding that other MPs had told him such an amount was too small.
“But that was all we had,” he said.
Muda’s 19 candidates in the state elections were all defeated and lost their deposits.
On Muda’s audit report for its fundraiser held during the December 2021 floods, Syed Saddiq said about 45,000 donors contributed a total of RM2.1 million to the Maribantu Flood Mission.
“Despite facing challenges in the flood audit process, this audit remains a top priority, and to ensure transparency, Muda has engaged the services of a reputable top 10 audit firm.
“The audit started in September 2022 and we hope it will be completed in the near future,” he said.
Meanwhile, asked when Muda’s inaugural party elections can be expected, Syed Saddiq said it will “follow our party’s constitution” in deciding on the matter.
“Where we can, we want to facilitate party elections immediately in accordance with our party’s constitution,” he said.
In August, party secretary-general Amir Hadi said Muda will hold its internal polls by December 2024.
Amir said it was normal practice for political parties not to hold their inaugural elections immediately following the first year of their existence. - FMT
