Allocation not a bribe, says Bersatu MP supporting Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Labuan’s Bersatu MP, Suhaili Abdul Rahman, who recently declared support for the government, has dismissed claims the development allocation he received was a bribe to entice him to back the administration.

“How can an allocation set aside by the government constitute a bribe? It’s impossible,” he told FMT.

Suhaili, who was suspended by Bersatu for six years on Tuesday, said MPs were only eligible for the allocation if they supported Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

“So, I don’t understand where claims of corrupt elements stem from,” he said.

He was responding to the move by Arau MP Shahidan Kassim to table a special motion today on the four Perikatan Nasional MPs who have backed Anwar.

Shahidan claimed that the representatives from the opposition bloc were promised allocations that were currently only given to government MPs.

“This (giving allocations to opposition MPs who support the government) is a corrupt practice,” he was quoted as saying.

The other Bersatu MPs who have pledged support for the government are Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli).

Yesterday, Suhaili confirmed with FMT that he received an allocation for his constituency after declaring support for Anwar on Oct 30.

He said the allocation was received on a pro rata basis, but declined to reveal the amount.

Suhaili said he was not afraid of being criticised for his actions, adding that he would also be “cursed at” if he could not help his constituents.

“I have a choice, to either be an effective elected representative or one in name only,” he said.

He said voters would not accept the excuse that he could not help his constituents because he was in the opposition. - FMT
