Bersatu MPs have reaffirmed their support for the leadership of party president Muhyiddin Yassin, saying they will resist external attempts to divide the party using renegade lawmakers who have pledged to support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In a statement released by Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, they said that the actions of Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid and Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman will not succeed in dividing them.
Bersatu has delegated the duo’s party roles to other members pending a decision on disciplinary action against them.
"Bersatu MPs remain steadfast with the leadership of president Muhyiddin and any attempt by outside parties to divide party unity through the actions of the Kuala Kangsar and Labuan MPs will not succeed.
"At the same time, Bersatu is very committed in its efforts to empower the Perikatan Nasional coalition and its mandate and great support from the people in the last general and state elections.
"Therefore, Bersatu will not compromise with any disciplinary misconduct among members, especially involving MPs and assemblypersons," read the statement.
The Bersatu supreme council decided that the respective state bodies would assume the management of the Kuala Kangsar and Labuan divisions, pending a decision made by the Disciplinary Board against both men, who are also the division heads.
"Vice president Mohd Radzi Jidin was also appointed as head of the Federal Territories leadership, effective immediately, replacing Suhaili," Hamzah (above) added.
On Oct 30, Suhaili voiced support for Anwar’s premiership, citing the rising cost of living in his constituency.
He said he took the decision after thorough consideration and hearing the grievances of his constituents burdened by the increasing cost of living, as well as electricity and water supply disruptions in the last 15 years.
On Oct 12, Iskandar had done the same thing.
Threat claims
Hamzah previously alleged that Iskandar was threatened with corruption charges, in return for voicing support for Anwar. He did not provide any proof to back his claim.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the agency is not involved in the matter, while Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said no police report has been lodged.
Bersatu’s leadership has issued a show-cause letter to Iskandar.
With the backing of the two PN parliamentarians, Anwar has the support of 149 MPs which is just over two-thirds allowing him the support needed to amend the Federal Constitution. - Mkini
