'Blood, bombs, Israeli terror’ - fast food outlet's menu hacked

The manager of a fast food outlet in Kuala Langat, Selangor, filed a police report after the premise’s digital menu was hacked.

In a statement this evening, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said two suspects, both Malaysians, were arrested in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur in connection with the case.

According to him, the outlet’s manager lodged a report with the Kuala Langat police district police headquarters on Oct 31.

“This was after the digital menu suddenly featured an image depicting the food items available at the outlet together with ‘blood, bombs and bullets’ and the words ‘proud sponsors of Israeli terrorism’,” he added.

Hussein said police subsequently opened an investigation paper under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

Section 504 of the Penal Code deals with intentional insults intended to provoke a breach of peace.

Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act, meanwhile, relates to “any sort of insulting behaviour – be it in terms of using insulting or indecent words, language or gestures – which is administered with the intention of disturbing the peace or provoking someone else is regarded as an offence against the law”.

Hussein, who did not name the fast food outlet, said police also seized a mobile phone from the suspects, both aged 26.

He said the two have been been remanded for four days to facilitate further investigations.

Since the conflict in the Middle East erupted on Oct 7, there have been calls to boycott businesses and products linked to Israel.

Among them was McDonald’s, which landed in the spotlight, after the franchise in Israel provided free meals to Israeli soldiers.

Subsequently, McDonald’s Malaysia, which is locally owned, clarified that McDonald’s Israel’s action does not reflect its stance.

On Oct 17, McDonald’s Malaysia said it had contributed RM1 million to the Palestine Humanitarian Fund launched under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Meanwhile, Palestine ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali lauded the Malaysian public’s commitment to boycotting businesses and products affiliated with Israel.

“Any measures supporting Palestine and its people are deeply valued. The boycott of Israeli products and franchises supporting Israel serves to minimise the suffering of Palestinians.

"Whatever is done in Malaysia towards all those (businesses) who support Israel is very appreciated," he told reporters today. - Mkini
