Cops cripple local syndicate selling phishing templates

IGP Razarudin Husain said the syndicate had been active since last year.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have crippled a local syndicate selling phishing templates imitating the websites of government and big companies, following a raid in various states on Nov 6.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the syndicate had been active since last year and sold the templates to others looking to dupe potential victims in the US, Australia and Malaysia.

“We carried out simultaneous raids in Sabah, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Perak, and nabbed eight individuals including the 36-year old mastermind,” he said in a media conference at the police headquarters at Bukit Aman.

Based on initial investigations, the police learned that the mastermind, based in Sabah, taught himself to develop the templates widely used by online scammers to collect personal credentials from victims.

Following the raid, police seized computers believed to have been used by the suspects and a cryptocurrency fund worth close to RM1 million in an e-wallet account, as well as 1,038 login and password credentials.

However, the police believed the syndicate had raked in more than RM1 million in profit from the unlawful activities, as it was also linked to two investment schemes involving over RM1.2 million in losses.

Razarudin said the police received 37 reports regarding the schemes. - FMT
