Gaza and Hiroshima 2 different situations, say analysts

PETALING JAYA: Anwar Ibrahim’s comparison of war damage in Gaza as being worse than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 has found disfavour among several academics.

They were in agreement the prime minister should not have made such a comparison.

Aruna Gopinath, a former lecturer at the National Defence University, said overblown comparisons of historical incidents should be discouraged.

Syed Arabi Idid of International Islamic University Malaysia said Hiroshima and Gaza were of fundamentally different nature and outcomes.

The US decision to drop the bomb in Japan in 1945 was a legitimate military action as the two countries were at war and was a one-time event. However, Israel was continuously shelling Gaza despite knowing what impact such action would make.

“I don’t think the prime minister should make such a comparison,” he told FMT.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia professor Teo Kok Seong said the severity of Gaza’s situation in comparison to the Hiroshima bombing was not straightforward and was subjective.

Teo said the perception of the Gaza situation was heavily influenced by religious sentiments, particularly among Muslims. “Since Muslims feel sympathy and empathy, they are likely to view the situation as more severe than the bombing of Hiroshima.”

However, Aruna said a solid understanding of history was needed before commenting on events of varying scales.

Anwar should not have compared the two cases, she said. “As the prime minister, he should be careful in how he approaches this question.”

The exact number of people killed in the Hiroshima bombing remains unknown. Estimates of those killed by the blast, firestorm, and radiation effects have ranged from 66,000 to 140,000.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said yesterday that more than 10,000 people have died from the Israeli bombardment. - FMT
