PETALING JAYA: Bersatu is set to use next week’s annual general assembly to restore confidence in the party after four of its MPs recently pledged their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, says a Bersatu Supreme Council member.
Acknowledging that the issue will be front and centre during leaders’ speeches and debates by delegates, Eddin Syazlee Shith said the party has to use the assembly as a platform to clarify the latest developments to the grassroots.
“We don’t want members to misinterpret (information) and take things out of context,” he told FMT ahead of the Nov 23-25 general assembly at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam.
“I believe the president (Muhyiddin Yassin) and the leadership will convince Bersatu members to return to the party’s struggle.”
The former Kuala Pilah MP said despite the challenges the party currently faces, it should be steadfast against any attempts to weaken Bersatu.
“As the opposition, our duty is to serve as a check and balance (to the government). We cannot be too disheartened about the latest developments,” he said.
Since Oct 12, four Bersatu MPs have pledged to back the current government – Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Zahari Kechik (Jeli) and Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang).
Last Friday, Muhyiddin said the party would lodge reports with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission after claiming there was evidence that the four MPs were either threatened or offered development allocations in exchange for their support.
Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the wing has lodged a police report on the matter. - FMT
