MP questions impact on trade with Singapore after 'communist' claim

PARLIAMENT | A government backbencher debating allocations for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) questioned if recent claims by an opposition MP will affect Malaysian products in Singapore.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, RSN Rayer (Pakatan Harapan-Jelutong) did not directly name Siti Mastura Muhammad (Perikatan Nasional-Kepala Batas).

However, he cited her allegations of family ties between DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, DAP national chairperson Lim Guan Eng, former Singapore prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, and former communist leader Ong Boon Hua, also known as Chin Peng.

“I would like to ask, will the recent statement made by an MP linking Lee Kuan Yew with communists cause any problems for reported (government) efforts?

“The MP’s ‘loud mouth’ may affect two-way trade between Singapore and Malaysia,” Rayer (above, left) said during committee stage debates on the Supply Bill 2024 today.

Siti Mastura then stood up to raise a point of order against him.

“I ask Jelutong to retract the matter. I have given my statement (to the police) and there have been no decisions yet.

“So I ask Jelutong to retract,” said Siti Mastura who was yesterday summoned for questioning at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters and her lawyer later said they submitted “reference materials” to the police.

Rayer, however, dismissed her and insisted he did not mention any MP by name.

“I stood up (to debate) because I realise the importance of trade between Malaysia and Singapore,” he said.

He claimed that following Siti Mastura’s remarks, there were complaints from Malay businesses who said they feared their products may be boycotted by Singapore.

At the start of his debate, Rayer also credited government efforts through SME Corp to develop local SMEs, including the latest reported Malaysia-Singapore cooperation signed last month. - Mkini
