'MPs blackmailed': PN gathering info before lodging report

Perikatan Nasional is gathering information about the alleged threats faced by its MPs before filing a police report, says secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

This comes after two Bersatu MPs pledged support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“We are in the midst of gathering information. We are taking pictures of those who meet us, we want to see where these people come from.

“It’s easy, they (the individuals making the threats) will say that they are doing this because they love the prime minister, and the prime minister can say that they don’t recognise them. It’s normal (procedure).

“Police reports (can be made) but we also know that that will be the explanation. But importantly, this needs to stop. That is what’s most important to us,” Hamzah said during a press conference at PN’s headquarters today.

Hamzah was commenting on calls to lodge a police report regarding his allegation that Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid was blackmailed and forced to support Anwar’s tenure as prime minister.

Anwar told the PN secretary-general to prove his claim by submitting evidence to authorities so they could investigate. The Larut MP made the claim on Oct 13, a day after Iskandar issued a press statement saying that he now supports the prime minister, albeit insisting that he was still loyal to the opposition party.

Hamzah claimed that Iskandar made the decision after the Kuala Kangsar MP was taken to a hotel in Damansara where he allegedly met a senior MACC officer and was threatened with corruption charges.

MACC denied the allegation and the police said that no report has been made on the matter.

Bersatu’s leadership had issued a show-cause letter to Iskandar.

On Oct 30, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman also voiced support for Anwar, citing the rising cost of living in his constituency.

Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that he had no prior knowledge of the two Bersatu MPs pledging support to him.

With the backing of the two PN MPs, Anwar should now have the support of 149 MPs, just over two-thirds, and be able to amend the Federal Constitution. - Mkini
