PETALING JAYA: PAS has named Samsuri Mokhtar, a party vice-president who is Terengganu menteri besar, as the Perikatan Nasional candidate for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election next month.
His candidacy was announced tonight by deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
Samsuri, 53, who has a degree in aerospace engineering, is state assemblyman for Ru Rendang, and a former aide to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
His rival in the by-election will be former chief of defence forces Raja Affandi Raja Noor who was announced as the Barisan Nasional candidate.
The Kemaman by-election was called following an election court decision on Sept 26 which annulled the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the November 2022 general election. Che Alias won with a majority of 27,179 votes against Terengganu Umno chairman Ahmad Said, Rosli Ab Ghani (Pejuang) and Hasuni Sudin (Pakatan Harapan).
Nomination day for the by-election is Nov 18, with polling day on Dec 2. - FMT
