PKR not member of Israel-supporting int'l group, Fahmi says

PKR refuted claims it is a member of Liberal International, a “world federation of liberal political parties” that recently expressed solidarity with Israel.

PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil said the insinuation that his party was a member of Liberal International was a calculated scheme.

“Lately, there has been a planned attempt to associate PKR with Liberal International.

“I can confirm that PKR has never been a member of Liberal International,” he said in a statement today.

Fahmi, who is also the communications and digital minister, asserted that his party stands in full solidarity with the Palestinian people.

“PKR also strongly condemns the cruelty of the Israel Zionist regime, which continues to oppress, pressure, and kill the Palestinian people.”

This comes after a clip went viral on X (Twitter), illustrating Liberal International’s website that displayed the Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim-led PKR as an “observer member party” in Asia.

Checks on the website found that Gerakan is also an “observer member party” of Liberal International.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Gerakan president Dominic Lau for comments on the matter.

On Oct 7, Liberal International said it stood in solidarity with the people of Israel, condemned attacks against civilians, and recognised Israel’s right to defend itself.

Then on Oct 14, the group expressed deep concern about threats to the lives and homes of civilians in Gaza.

“Liberal International is deeply saddened by the unfolding tragedy and human suffering resulting from the recent Hamas attack on Israel.

“We mourn the loss of innocent civilian lives on all sides of the conflict.

“The carnage caused by Hamas’ incursion into Israeli territory has led to a military response by Israel.”

It also insisted that all combatants act in accordance with the laws of war and international humanitarian law to minimise civilian casualties.
