PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has clarified that he had no prior knowledge that Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid and Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman would shift their support to him.
While delivering his Budget 2024 winding-up speech in the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said both PN parliamentarians had not held negotiations with him or any minister.
“If you want an explanation, go ahead and ask Kuala Kangsar and Labuan MPs.
“However, I welcome their maturity and wisdom,” Anwar added.
He said this in response to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) who queried if there is a standard operating procedure outlined for opposition MPs to obtain development allocations.
Syed Saddiq also asked if negotiations with Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof would suffice or do opposition MPs have to follow in the footsteps of the two aforementioned PN parliamentarians to issue statements voicing support for Anwar’s premiership.
“This is an important matter so MPs will know what is there to be done to get allocations,” Syed Saddiq added.
Iskandar and Suhaili, who are both Bersatu MPs, expressed their support for Anwar last month, citing the rising cost of living in their respective constituencies.
Earlier, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin alleged that Iskandar was threatened with corruption charges, in return for voicing support for Anwar. He did not provide any proof to back his claim.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the agency was not involved in the matter, while Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said no police report has been lodged.
Bersatu’s leadership had issued a show-cause letter to Iskandar.
With the backing of the two PN MPs, Anwar should now have the support of 149 MPs, just over two-thirds, and be able to amend the Federal Constitution. - Mkini
