PETALING JAYA: Nazmi Rosli, from Sarawak, won the top honour and took home a cash prize of RM50,000 at the Malaysia Teacher Prize 2023 ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur today.

Nazmi, an English teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Sebangang, Lawas, was chosen for his efforts to make his lessons interesting by introducing common life experiences, such as entering a laundromat or boarding an aircraft, in the classroom by only using recycled materials.

As a pioneer of Kelab Filpen (a short films club), Nazmi said he also provided opportunities for his students to express themselves through the making of short films, including Teether, which was accepted at the Horror Unleashed film festival in Portugal.

Commenting on his victory, Nazmi told Bernama he was very grateful that his persistence had finally paid off.

“For me, this platform is an opportunity to not only share the story of our daily lives as educators, but also to highlight the roots of our life goals, both inside and outside the classroom.”

Education minister Fadhlina Sidek presented the award to Nazmi.

She said the ministry was committed to closing the education gap between the urban areas and interiors of Sabah and Sarawak.

The primary focus now is to repair dilapidated schools, she said. - FMT
