Syed Hussin’s ‘excuses’ sickening, says Bukit Gantang Bersatu chief

PETALING JAYA: The Bukit Gantang Bersatu chief has slammed Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal for declaring his support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government, calling the move “sickening” and a betrayal of his mandate.

In a statement, Ahmad Man dared Syed Hussin to resign from his post and contest again under Pakatan Harapan or Barisan Nasional (BN) if he was confident his constituents would approve of him backing Anwar.

“If the voters think his actions are meant to safeguard the people’s interests, he should undoubtedly win by a larger margin,” Ahmad said.

The division chief said Syed Hussin’s pledge to support Anwar at the Dewan Rakyat earlier was undemocratic and went against the wishes of his voters, Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Last week, Syed Hussin voiced frustration over the government’s lack of response to his requests for constituency development funds, adding that he would pledge his support for Anwar and his government if he received it.

In response, Ahmad said that Malaysia’s democratic system would “collapse” if all opposition MPs declared their support for the prime minister just to gain federal support.

“Syed Hussin’s excuse that he did this to serve the people’s interests better is sickening,” said Ahmad.

“In the six state elections held after the formation of the Madani government, the people still supported PN despite knowing that we are not part of the federal government.

“So how can he claim he is acting to protect the people’s interests? Whose views does he represent?”

Syed Hussin is the fifth MP from Bersatu to back the unity government. Formerly of Umno, he first won the Bukit Gantang seat in the 2018 general election on a BN ticket.

He later quit the BN lynchpin and remained an independent MP for two years, before joining Bersatu in June 2020.

The other four MPs from Bersatu who have declared support for Anwar are Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli). - FMT
