Timbalan Menteri Pendidikan Lim Hui Ying mengakui formula perangkaan yang digunakan kementerian terkhilaf dalam menggambarkan keadaan sebenar

My Comments :

So even the Timbalan Menteri Pendidikan does not agree with the "statistics" presented by the Menteri Pendidikan.

There are also other serious  "perangkaan yang digunakan kementerian terkhilaf dalam menggambarkan keadaan sebenar"   that is going on.

For example the Menteri solidariti had said that the number of Science students (STEM) in the upper secondary schools has increased substantially.

"Minister  said as of August this year, the percentage of STEM students was 45.73%, up from 40.95% in 2021"

I have friends among educationists who seriously doubt these figures. They say that a 5% increase is a very huge number for the whole country.

Also the reality on the ground does not reflect these optimistic figures.

In one well known Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan in Petaling Jaya there are only two science classes versus four arts classes.  And while the enrolment in the arts classes are quite full (40 students or more) the enrolment in the science classes is seldom full.

It gets worse in other schools especially in rural schools and in small town schools. Not only are there fewer science classes but the number of students per class is also shrinking.

This has led to another sizeable problem that our education system is facing - the shortage of science teachers. Or rather the lack of demand for science teachers.

When a school has only two science classes there is less demand for science teachers. The school principal will have less urgency to call the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri and ask for more science teachers.

And the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri will have less urgency to call Putrajaya and ask for more science teachers. And on and on.

When schools are teaching ELEVEN periods of agama related subjects every week it is more likely that school principals will call the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri and ask for more agama teachers.

And then the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri will likely call Putrajaya and ask for more agama teachers. And on and on.

This is not something that will happen. This is something that has already happened. Hence you see that the SMKs are full of religious teachers and less of science teachers.

Even if the enrolment in STEM classes has increased so what?

'There are 11 'agama related' periods in total.  Mathematics and Science have five and three classes, respectively'.

The SMKs have become religious ghettos.

The views expressed are those of the writer and do not necessarily reflect those of MMKtT.
