KEMAMAN: Barisan Nasional must work hard during the Kemaman by-election campaign period to regain the trust of voters who were once die-hard Umno and BN supporters, a former assemblyman said.
Abu Bakar Ali said the party needs to understand why the constituency, once regarded as an Umno stronghold, fell to their rival by a handsome majority.
“To suddenly lose by a huge majority of 27,000. This time you don’t need to find 27,000 to compete, we need to find half of that, around 14,000 hardcore Umno supporters who have since backed PAS, if we want to win.
“That’s the only way, to work really hard to win them back, in whatever fashion,” he said.
“They actually want Umno but there might be something they’re dissatisfied with, maybe the leadership or they supported PAS because of empty promises,” said the five-term Kemasik assemblyman after a visit by BN candidate Raja Affandi Raja Noor.
A total of 141,790 Kemaman voters will cast their ballots on Dec 2, with early voting being held on Nov 28.
The by-election is a straight fight between Raja Affandi and PAS candidate Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. It was called after the election court annulled PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid’s victory in the general election last year. - FMT
