Debate with PN leaders, not cybertroopers, analyst tells Rafizi

PETALING JAYA: Economy minister Rafizi Ramli has been told to engage in policy debates with opposition leaders to maintain credibility instead of hosting podcasts with cybertroopers.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said having a public debate between Rafizi and opposition shadow ministers, or any Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders with economic pedigree, would provide more substance to the government’s intended economic direction.

He said by debating with leaders, the voters could listen and evaluate the ideas tabled by both sides as a public debate is a constructive medium to serve the best interests of the country.

“Having a podcast with PN cybertroopers would expose Rafizi to many risks, including questions from the public, an uncontrolled atmosphere and the possibility of falling into a trap,” Fauzi told FMT.

He said the government should decide the economic narrative of the country instead of giving attention to cybertroopers’ unfounded claims.

On Monday, Rafizi announced that he would host a “Yang Bakar Menteri (YBM)” podcast every fortnight, kicking off on Jan 8, 2024, which would allow the public to hold discussions with him.

He said the podcast would be open to anyone including academics, government supporters, and ordinary citizens, especially opposition cybertroopers.

He added that he would actively look for opposition cybertroopers and activists who have made false claims about him.

Meanwhile, Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir said Rafizi’s decision to host the podcast was on point as it could serve as a medium to counter unfounded claims against the government, given the PKR deputy president’s depth of understanding and debating skills.

He said the unconventional way introduced by Rafizi would help the government meet the critics face to face, while countering claims by supplying supported data, facts and evidence.

“One of the ongoing problems is that it seems Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was making an effort to come forward to provide explanations alone.

“If Rafizi is able to do so, it will enhance his integrity and credibility as a minister, and ultimately help uplift the government’s image,” Jeniri said. - FMT
