PETALING JAYA: The first entirely crowdfunded Malaysian movie, “Pendatang”, received high praise from netizens following its premiere last night.
The film amassed over 20,000 views on YouTube within two hours after it started the livestream at 9pm.
A user named Syafiq Hazmy described it as a good movie, saying that it “demonstrates that if we exhibit extreme racial tendencies, there will be parties taking advantage to oppress us”.
“We Malaysians should look out for each other. When we fight among ourselves, those in power take advantage,” he commented on the movie’s YouTube page.
Another user, faithfultrue7100, was left amazed by the production’s cinematography and storyline. “Wow, we finally got a dystopian Malaysian movie, and I am loving it,” he said.
Meanwhile, another user expressed satisfaction in seeing a film production that did not have to bow down to censorship.
“Kudos for making this movie on a small budget!! Excellent acting overall especially from the children and main villain… hope to see a sequel,” Bosshanzo wrote.
Many said it was a great movie that emphasised the importance of stopping any form of racist behaviour.
The Cantonese-language movie is a dystopian thriller that dwells on what would happen if resentment between Malaysia’s different races is not checked and left to fester.
It is set in the future where a Segregation Act divides ethnic groups into tightly separated and controlled areas.
The plot involves a Chinese-Malaysian family who is ordered to relocate to a wooden house previously owned by Malays in a rural area after a traffic offence.
The Kuman Pictures production collected some RM300,000 to make the movie instead of traditionally sourcing for funders.
The producers explained that it chose to screen the movie on YouTube as the film would have never passed screening for national cinematic release by the Film Censorship Board (LPF). - FMT
