Fahmi touts Kemaman winner Samsuri as opposition leader

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has suggested that Terengganu MB Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar be appointed as opposition leader now that he has been elected to Parliament.

According to Fahmi, the coalition government is not worried about PAS’ win in yesterday’s Kemaman by-election and will work harder to ensure the delivery of its services to the constituents.

“The victory by PAS doesn’t change the situation or the numbers in Parliament,” he said at the ‘Runhack: Scam Alert 2023’ programme at Bukit Jalil National Stadium today.

According to Bernama, he said while the majority of 37,220 votes was large, it was smaller than the majorities obtained by Bangi MP Shahredzan Johan, who won with a majority of 69,701 votes or Amanah president Mohamad Sabu who won in Kota Raja with a 73,998 majority in last year’s general election.

Fahmi said he did not rule out the possibility that Samsuri (above) would be appointed as the opposition leader in Parliament to replace Larut MP and PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

Yesterday, PAS held on to Kemaman as Ahmad Samsuri garnered 64,998 votes, defeating BN’s candidate Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor who obtained 27,778 votes.

The by-election was called after the victory of PAS’ Che Alias Hamid was annulled, following a petition that there were elements of inducing voters during campaigning. - Mkini
