Huge Kemaman win confirms momentum with PN, says Takiyuddin

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan has hailed the victory of Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar in the Kemaman by-election with a larger majority of 37,220 votes, saying it is proof that momentum is with the opposition.

“The win, which represents the support of 70 percent of voters not only proves the acceptance of his (Samsuri’s) position as menteri besar of Terengganu but also confirms the momentum of support for Perikatan Nasional in the series of by-elections held after the 15th general election.

“This includes the Kuala Terengganu and Pulai parliamentary by-elections, as well as the Simpang Jeram and Pelangai state by-elections,” he said in a statement today.

Takiyuddin (above) went on to claim it reflected the people’s rejection of the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Pakatan Harapan-BN coalition he leads.

“It is clear that the central government continues to fail to gain the support and trust of the people even after one year in power.

“In the context of this Kemaman by-election, the number of votes obtained by Harapan-BN candidates was 27,778 which represents a 30 percent support level, which is much lower than the votes obtained by both Harapan and BN in GE15, respectively 8,340 and 38,535 votes, representing 41 percent support.

“In other words, the Harapan-BN coalition not only failed to garner new support but continued to lose the support it previously enjoyed in Kemaman,” he said.

Takiyuddin was talking up the increased support for what is seen as the largely mono-ethnic coalition of PN which is dominated by the Malay-Muslim axis of PAS and Bersatu.

He claimed the federal government was a purveyor of administrative confusion and that voters rejected “allocation fund politics”, possibly referring to the switch of support to the ruling administration by five Bersatu MPs in recent weeks.

“PAS remains committed to mature, dignified, and democratic politics, not only in its role as an opposition bloc in Parliament, but also as the administration in the states it governs,” he said.

In the meantime, PAS is also ready to take on greater responsibilities at the national level when the situation so requires, he added. - Mkini
