MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng has called on BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to wake up and accept that Malay support for the coalition continues to decline.
This is after Zahid claimed that BN's poor performance in the Kemaman by-election was because the coalition's "white voters" did not go out to vote.
White in Malaysian electoral lingo denotes strong supporters.
"Zahid should not be daydreaming or deluding that there are still 10,000 'white votes'. Instead, he should seriously explore why Umno is losing support," Tan (above) said in a statement today.
Kemaman was formerly a BN stronghold until the coalition lost the seat in 2018.
In a by-election last Sunday, Perikatan Nasional bagged 70.1 percent of votes in the seat.
Tan said it is clear from all the elections that have taken place since November last year that Malay votes are split between BN and PN.
However, he said BN and Umno can leverage their role within the government to win support.
"They (Umno ministers) should effectively implement policies that focus on economic development and improving the well-being of the people to gain support from people of all ethnicities, including Malay voters.
"Those who win the hearts of the people, win the world," he added. - Mkini
