UNOFFICIAL: PAS’s Samsuri wins Kemaman by-election

This was Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar’s first time contesting a parliamentary seat.

PETALING JAYA: Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has successfully defended the Kemaman parliamentary seat for PAS, according to unofficial results.

As of 8.17pm, Samsuri had garnered 56,148 votes while Barisan Nasional candidate Raja Affandi Raja Noor had received 23,941 votes.

Samsuri was in a straight fight with Raja Affandi, a retired general and former defence forces chief.

The by-election was called following an election court decision on Sept 26 annulling the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th general election (GE15) last year.

The election court held that the distribution of government aid to voters during the campaign period constituted election bribery.

Che Alias won the seat in GE15 with a 27,179-vote majority over his closest rival, Terengganu Umno chief and former menteri besar Ahmad Said. The other two candidates were Hasuni Sudin of Pakatan Harapan and Rosli Ab Ghani of Pejuang.

Terengganu PAS said 160 of 249 ballot boxes have already been counted.
