Abang Johari says 'not dumb' to plunge into peninsula's political mess

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg has once again dismissed speculations connecting him to the Dubai Move - an alleged plot to topple the government - and the prime minister position.

According to a Borneo Post report, Abang Johari (above), who heads Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), said he was “not dumb enough to be plunged into the peninsula’s political mess”.

He explained that it would be absurd for him - a leader of a political party with only 23 MPs - to be appointed to the top post.

“I’ve read (the media reports) and I see my name in them, alleging that I could be elected as prime minister.

“But I know my capability. If my capability is like this, so be it,” he was quoted as saying by Borneo Post.

He then reiterated calls for Anwar Ibrahim to remain as prime minister until the end of his term.

“Our country is based on democracy, and when elections are held and the results are in, we should accept the results.

“We in GPS believe that politics must be kept in order,” he said.

Prioritise govt’s political stability

On Jan 1, Abang Johari said a change in government would be a “waste of time”.

He was cited by Malay Mail as saying that the political stability of the federal government should be prioritised.

“We compete with our neighbours to attract foreign investment. But if Malaysia is in a political crisis, who wants to invest in the country?” he asked.

Previously, it was reported that the opposition had allegedly offered the prime minister post to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, which is the main component of GPS, as part of the Dubai Move.

Sarawak was also allegedly promised greater autonomy, including up to 20 percent of oil revenue royalties for the state if GPS withdrew support for Anwar.
