Ngeh's house fire: Motive still under investigation - Perak police chief

Perak police are still investigating the motive behind a fire that broke out at Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham’s house on Jan 10.

Speaking briefly to Malaysiakini today, Perak police chief Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the probe on the case is still underway.

This comes after an individual was arrested on Jan 12 due to suspicion of committing arson at Ngeh’s house.

Yusri said the suspect was arrested in Shah Alam, Selangor at about 4am and will be remanded until tomorrow (Jan 16) for further investigation.

Asked today if the remand order against the suspect will be extended, Yusri said to “wait for the results tomorrow”.

On Saturday (Jan 13), Yusri confirmed that the man, who is in his 30s, is not a member of any political party.

The man also tested negative for drugs, he added.

He was also reported as saying that the force had seized two mobile phones from the suspect, who does not have a criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 435 Penal Code which is liable to 14 years imprisonment and a fine.

Fire damages

In the early morning incident at Ngeh’s house in Ayer Tawar, Manjung last Wednesday, there were no casualties reported but three cars were affected, including a Mercedes E300, which was almost completely razed.

Also partially burnt were a Honda CRV and a Toyota Hilux, as well as the house’s porch roof.

Following the incident, Ngeh said he forgives the alleged arsonists behind the fire, but also blamed Perikatan Nasional components PAS and Bersatu for fanning tensions that led to the incident.

Various parties including those from PN had condemned the incident.

However, PAS and Bersatu leaders have hit out at the Perak DAP leader for his claim against them. - Mkini
