Sedition probe: Cops quiz Ngeh, 66 witnesses called

Police have recorded DAP lawmaker Ngeh Koo Ham’s statement over his suggestion to appoint non-Muslim experts to a committee on syariah laws, which led to the accusation that he was meddling in Islamic matters.

“We have called 66 witnesses to facilitate investigations.

“This includes recording a statement from the complainant who made the report and the media involved,” federal CID director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain told Utusan Online.

According to him, a total of 70 police reports have been lodged regarding this issue nationwide.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Dec 28, Ngeh issued a media statement calling for non-Muslims and a representative from the Malaysian Bar to be part of the committee looking into harmonising the syariah law and Federal Constitution.

This courted a fierce backlash from various quarters, with a coalition of Islamic NGOs also demanding DAP to sack the Beruas MP.

Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is the chairperson of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI), also issued a reminder to non-Muslims not to interfere in Islamic matters.

Two days later, Ngeh apologised and retracted his statement.

“As it has been now clarified that the special committee was formed by MKI headed by His Royal Highness Sultan Selangor, which I was not aware of earlier, I hereby withdraw my proposal and tender my sincere apology.

“I have no intention whatsoever to interfere in Islamic affairs,” he added.

On Jan 12, Ngeh’s residence in Perak was hit by a suspected arson, leading to three cars being razed.

Much to the chagrin of PAS and Bersatu, he blamed opposition politicians for fanning the flames and sowing hatred against him amongst the Malay Muslims. - Mkini
