IPOH: A man detained in Shah Alam yesterday for suspected arson at the home of Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham is not a member of any political party, said Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri.

“Not a political party member. We are still investigating the motive,” Yusri told Bernama when contacted today.

He also said police have not received the results of the 30-year-old man’s urine sample yet.

The man was arrested at 4am yesterday and is under remand until Tuesday to assist in investigations.

Police seized two handphones from the suspect, who does not have a criminal record.

In the early morning incident on Wednesday, a Molotov cocktail was thrown on the porch of Ngeh’s house, resulting in a fire that damaged three of his cars.

Ngeh, a Perak DAP leader, said on Wednesday that the attack might be due to a statement he made on Dec 28 suggesting that non-Muslim constitutional experts be appointed to a committee studying the conflicts between shariah law and the Federal Constitution.

He later apologised and withdrew his statement, which had drawn flak from politicians. He said his suggestion was twisted by some politicians to incite fear within the Malay-Muslim community. - FMT
