PARLIAMENT | DAP’s Khoo Poay Tiong (Harapan-Kota Melaka) today called for the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to investigate the alleged assault on a hearing-impaired e-hailing driver.
During a debate on a Suhakam report, he said police officers involved in the case who were found to have abused their power must face legal action.
“In this matter, I hope that a thorough investigation can be carried out and there needs to be legal action if any of the police officers abused their power so that we can restore justice, especially to the victim in this incident,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
He touched on the allegation that police officers had pressured the 46-year-old victim into withdrawing his report, saying that it might be time to reconsider establishing the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
Khoo was referring to the alleged assault by an escort for Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim that occurred at the St Regis Hotel lobby in KL Sentral on May 28.
After the incident, the Malaysian Deaf Advocacy and Well-being Organisation (Dawn) claimed that the disabled man was treated as a suspect.
Upon lodging his report, the victim was asked to hand over his phone and he was left unattended for hours at the police officer’s office, it said.
He asked for his phone to be returned but was refused, it added.
On June 5, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the investigation papers of the incident had been sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers. - Mkini
