Organisers of the “Rakyat Lawan Anwar” rally have announced that they will go ahead with the planned protest, which is set to take place at the parking lot facing the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya this Saturday.
This decision comes despite police warnings urging the public not to participate in the protest, as it has not received permission from the location’s owner Putrajaya Corporation.
Pergerakan Demi Negara lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali said the group does not need permission from anyone to assemble peacefully.
“Under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, organisers only need to notify the police about the assembly. It is guaranteed by law. There is a court decision stating that it is the duty of the police to provide security for the participants.
“The police cannot take action against the attendees. They can only take action against the organisers. Therefore, the police cannot prevent participants from attending,” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Muhammad Rafique (above) also said the organisers had sent letters to Putrajaya Corporation and the police regarding the rally but had not received any official response.
Today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa stated that stern action would be taken against anyone participating in the rally.
He said the rally does not comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and Putrajaya Corporation does not permit the area to be used.
Eight demands
Meanwhile, Demi Negara spokesperson Aidil Yunus, also known as “YB Viral”, said the rally is not to tarnish Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s image but to urge him to fulfil the “people’s demands”.
“After 18 months in government, the people are facing various problems and the government does not care. For us, Anwar is the problem. We have eight demands.
“So, this rally is the first warning letter to Anwar. If he refuses to fulfil them, we will rally again at other locations, maybe in Tambun (Anwar’s parliamentary constituency), Bagan Datuk (Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s parliamentary constituency),” he said.
Among their demands are lowering diesel prices, addressing the cost of living, improving the working conditions of government healthcare workers, and providing equal allocations for all elected representatives.
Aidil said the excuse for banning the rally, which was the absence of permission from Putrajaya Corporation, is unacceptable as it is a government entity.
He also said PAS’ Unit Amal has expressed their readiness to help manage the rally.
“Our advice to participants is to assemble peacefully. If anyone incites trouble, we will detain them and hand them over to the police,” he added. - Mkini
