Cops summon 12 as part of probe into anti-Anwar rally

The police have opened an investigation into the Rakyat Tolak Anwar rally and have summoned 12 individuals to assist in the probe.

According to a statement by Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa, the investigation is being carried out under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

“The assembly was held on Saturday, June 29, 2024… at the public car park outside the Seri Perdana Complex, Precinct 10, Putrajaya by the organisers.

“This was despite being advised by the police previously that the owner of the premises did not give permission for the use of the location.

“In connection with that, the police have opened an investigation paper under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

“A total of 12 individuals including the organisers have been identified to be summoned to testify in the near future,” said Rusdi.

Yesterday, speaking after the rally, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the rally demonstrates respect for the public’s right to assemble peacefully and criticise the government.

He further noted that it illustrated everyone’s opportunity to voice their opinions without interference.

“The freedom they enjoy today is proof that under the Malaysian government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Madani approach, opportunities are provided to respect the rights of every citizen,” he told reporters in Sungai Bakap, Penang.

During the rally, about 250 participants dressed in black gathered to present eight demands to the government, including the reinstatement of diesel subsidies and the prevention of price increases for RON95 petrol and gas. - Mkini
