MFL cancels point docking, reduces fine on Selangor FC

The country’s football operator Malaysian Football League (MFL) today decided to lessen its recent punishment of Selangor FC.

It is cancelling the three-point penalty and reducing the RM100,000 fine meted out to the football club for failing to play in a Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Johor last month.

In a statement, MFL said its board of directors reviewed the punishment out of respect for Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who expressed his disappointment over the matter yesterday.

However, the board maintained its decision for Selangor FC to pay compensation to JDT and MFL for losses incurred from its failure to play the match.

“We are also cancelling the decision to ban Selangor from bringing spectators during the 14th Malaysia Super League match between Selangor and JDT at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium,” said MFL.

According to its statement, MFL directors decided to reduce the RM100,000 fine to RM60,000.

It was reported that Selangor FC was dealt a heavy blow over the failure to play the match against JDT on May 10.

Selangor withdrew from playing the match following a spate of criminal incidents and threats on several players including their winger Faisal Halim who fell victim to an acid attack on May 5.

Following MFL’s decision to impose harsh punishment on the team, Sultan Sharafuddin in a statement yesterday expressed his dismay and anger, particularly at Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Hamidin Mohd Amin who has previously served as the secretary of the Football Association of Selangor.

The ruler said following the incidents that befell Faisal and other footballers, Selangor FC sent a notice to MFL to postpone its matches but was rejected.

“I’m extremely angered by the latest decision by MFL, which I deem irresponsible, merciless, inhumane, and does not show concern for the cruelty that has happened,” Sultan Sharafuddin had said.

This prompted Hamidin to contact the Selangor palace and request an audience with the ruler. - Mkini
