Penang sundry shop owner remorseful over “one-by-one gentleman” brawl; says racism didn’t spark fight

FRESH off the Indian annae (Tamil for brother) from the “one -by-one gentleman” viral video landing a starring role in a Pak Mat Western advert, his opponent in the widely viewed brawl, too, has his moment in the spotlight.

The owner of Kim Leong Mini Mart who became an internet sensation with his slick taekwondo moves which felled the Indian annae – not once but thrice – was interviewed by BFM radio station.

Introducing himself as Goh Yap Eng in an episode of the Busy Finding Modal series, the 49-year-old Chinese shopkeeper was quick to dispel talk of the brawl being racial in nature.

Without revealing actual details of what sparked the disagreement between him and the clearly inebriated annea, Goh also hinted that drunkenness had nothing to do with it.

The 49-year-old expressed deep regret over the incident, further confessing that he had not been able to sleep after the fight went viral. Being remanded in the police lock up also gave him time to reflect on his actions.

He advised the public that his actions were not what martial arts was about. The sundry shop proprietor in Seberang Perai went on to urge people to take up taekwondo for the right reasons as opposed to using it to start fights like what he did.

Deep sense of entrepreneurship

Given that the interview was for Busy Finding Modal and supposed to be about ‘business-related’ issues, the towkay was asked about his experience running a sundry shop.

Giving viewers a peek into his background, the shopkeeper revealed that he dropped out of school at Form One to help his father run the family-owned kedai runcit.

Despite having to sacrifice much of his childhood, he has no regrets for what he deems as his duty to help in the family business.

Having over three decades of experience of running a sundry shop, the well-spoken businessman also shared how his humble set-up was able to withstand stiff competition from established franchises such as 99 Speedmart.

He revealed that his customers were not so picky about price but appreciated the personal touch his shop offered. Hence Kim Leong Mini Mart was able to survive all these years despite previously having to face off competition from large hypermarkets such as Tesco and Carrefour.

The video has generated 1.1 million views at the time of writing and elicited plenty of comments. This is a sample.

Despite having limited formal education, many netizens were impressed by the shopkeeper’s grasp of the national language.

Many netizens had highlighted the “cinematography” of the original video of the brawl when it first went viral. However, the identity of the cameraman remains a mystery.

Quite a few saluted Goh for his fortitude in helping with the family business from such an early age, reflecting his unselfish attitude and sense of familial duty.

More than one praised Goh for his hard-working ethic with some speaking from experience of being his customers.

Many netizens highlighted the positives of this entire viral video pointing to the fact that the two brawlers were able to bury the hatchet, underlining that all Malaysians should be able to get past their differences.

Somehow, FocusM believes there will not be the final word from the two viral sensations, given their infamy. Perhaps there will be more adverts or “one-by-one” business tutorials. Social media followers await with bated breath. – Focus Malaysia
