17-year-old charged with Orang Asli child’s murder

PETALING JAYA: 

A teenage boy has been charged at the magistrates’ court in Sungai Siput with the murder of 10-year-old Nuraina Humaira Rosli, whose body was found in a swampy area near Pos Kuala Mu in Perak.

The 17-year-old accused nodded when the charge was read to him before magistrate Nurul Asyifa Redzuan, Harian Metro reported.

However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The accused is charged with murdering the girl in a swampy area of Kampung Bersah, Pos Kuala Mu, Lasah, between 2.30pm and 5pm on Aug 16.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment for a term of 30 to 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted.

Juvenile offenders, if sentenced to death, would be detained under Section 97(2) of the Child Act 2001.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor RS Vitthiyeswary, while the accused was not represented.

The court has set Oct 28 for case re-mention for the submission of several reports.
