No need for MoU, give funds if you are sincere, Muhyiddin tells govt

Muhyiddin Yassin said he has not seen any revised draft of the MoU reported to have been sent to opposition MPs.

There is no need for a new draft memorandum of understanding on funds for opposition MPs if the government is sincere, says Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Why can’t they spare a small amount to help the rakyat? If the intention is genuine, there’s no need for an MoU,” Muhyiddin told a press conference on the sidelines of the party’s seventh annual general meeting here today.

He said the unity government should follow the example set by the Perikatan Nasional administration, which allocated funds for opposition MPs without asking them to sign an MoU.

“Can’t they follow PN’s example? When I was in office, the opposition came to me for allocations, and we gave it to them without issue. Why can’t they do the same?” the PN chairman asked.

During his tenure as the eighth prime minister, Muhyiddin’s government distributed RM300,000 to all MPs to provide food baskets to those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, allocations for opposition MPs were only introduced during Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration, after an MoU was signed in 2021 between the government and Pakatan Harapan.

Muhyiddin dismissed reports that a second draft of an MoU had been drawn up after the initial one was rejected by the opposition MPs, calling it mere speculation.

“We have not heard about a second draft being sent to us. If it exists, I am unaware,” he said.

The opposition had rejected the earlier draft, saying some provisions went against the Federal Constitution with conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras.

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin had reportedly said that PN was willing to negotiate the second draft, provided it offered a fair and balanced agreement.

On a separate matter, Muhyiddin said PAS Youth’s proposal for Takiyuddin Hassan to be appointed as PN secretary-general was merely an opinion.

He said suggestions are welcomed, but reiterated that the PN Supreme Council would make the final decision. - FMT
