PETALING JAYA: The federal government has started distributing RM1,000 in Bantuan Wang Ehsan to heads of households affected by floods nationwide since yesterday.
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, said the assistance would be distributed to each family moved to temporary relief centres (PPS).
The aid would be distributed in phases, Bernama reported.
“I hope the distribution of assistance, especially this cash assistance, is properly organised.
“We do not want any of the families moved to the PPS to be left out,” he said after visiting the PPS at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Matang in Kuala Berang, Terengganu, today.
Meanwhile, Zahid said the federal government has also asked state governments affected by floods to work on providing assistance and emergency funds to victims who have suffered major losses such as damage to their homes and household appliances.
Zahid said the government has sufficient allocations to distribute the Bantuan Wang Ihsan to the affected 30,000 families.
In fact, he said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, will increase the allocation for the cash assistance if the number of families exceeds the allocation provided.
In the meantime, he said the government is building 14 permanent disaster relief centres (PPKB) nationwide, or one PPKB in each state, for the convenience of flood victims.
“Allocations are already in place and the prime minister himself has given Nadma (the National Disaster Management Agency) an allocation of RM600 million in next year’s budget, which is RM100 million more than this year’s allocation,” he said.
Zahid said the flood situation this time is “very unusual” as yesterday afternoon there were only 37,000 victims nationwide, but this figure had reached around 137,000 victims this afternoon. - FMT
