Lorry crash causes 8km traffic jam on North-South Expressway

KUALA KUBU BARU: A collision involving two trailer trucks caused an eight-kilometre traffic jam along the southbound stretch of the North-South Expressway near Hulu Selangor.

The crash occurred at 1.30pm today when a container truck rammed into the rear left side of a low-loader trailer that had stopped abruptly following a brake system malfunction.

Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent M. Manimaran said preliminary investigations found that the trailer, driven by a man in his 40s, was travelling from Tanjung Malim towards Sungai Buaya.

"The trailer, which was not carrying any cargo, was travelling in the middle lane when it suddenly stopped after experiencing a malfunction in its air brake system, which affected the rear wheels.

"A container lorry driven by a man in his 30s, approaching from behind, then crashed into the rear left side of the trailer," he said in a statement today.

Manimaran said the collision obstructed the left and right lanes, causing traffic congestion stretching eight kilometres.

Photographs of the aftermath showed the orange cab of the container lorry overturned on its side beside the trailer, with debris scattered across the road.

The trailer remained stationary across part of the expressway, while other vehicles were seen navigating past the accident scene.

Police received a report on the accident at 1.45pm.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

Police urged witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to contact investigating officer Sergeant Masmira Aini Mohd Shadir at 03-6064 1222 or the nearest police station. - FMT
