UPDATED PKR leaders accused Prime Minister Najib Razak of giving the green light to water distributor SYABAS to "sabotage" the water supply in Selangor in a last ditch bid to wrest back the state for his Umno party.
They warned that if Rozali Ismail, a former Selangor Umno treasurer and the current executive chairman at SYABAS, continued to abuse his powers pleasing his "political masters" at the expense of the people, they would expose his lavish lifestyle and begin a campaign to have his massive RM17.25mil annual pay cut by RM10 mil and have this amount distributed to the people affected by the water problems as compensation.
"We never thought it would go so far - one month without water for (Wangsa Maju residents). It is clear there are plans to create a crisis situation and make the people hate the Pakatan Rakyat. I hold Syabas accountable for trying to mislead the people with twisted facts. This is a political problem and must be given a political answer. SYABAS cannot be allowed to hold the public or the state government to ransom like this," PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli told a press conference on Friday.
"Najib's political fate depends on winning back Selangor (in the coming general election). Without Selangor, it is a near certainty that Umno will throw him out. Then there is Rozali Ismail, the SYABAS chief. Rozali doesn't understand the meaning of negotiations. He only understands political talk. So we have to make it clear to the public what is happening. When SYABAS' political masters realize how upset and distressed the people are because of their politicking, they will back down and SYABAS will back down. Otherwise, there is no end to it."
Selangor is now governed by the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim. Najib has publicly vowed to take back the state by "all ways and means".
People being used in Najib's "dirty" political game to win back S'gor
Rafizi was referring to recent alarming reports wherein Rozali had warned that water shortage in several parts of Selangor may continue until the Chinese New Year next month.
The breakdown of 4 water pumps in densely-populated Wangsa Maju, with SYABAS staying mum on whether it planned to replace or repair the pumps also put PKR leaders on high alert.
Wangsa Maju is part of PKR MP for Ampang Zuraida Kamaruddin's constituency while her party mate Khalid Ibrahim is the Selangor chief minister.
"We have put up all the submissions and applications that are required. We are also considering buying pumps on our own. But we cannot accept Rozali's nonsensical explanations and threats anymore. The people are the ones suffering everyday while SYABAS keeps delaying and using confusing statements to buy time," Zuraida told Malaysia Chronicle at the sidelines of the conference.
"We decided to expose the entire matter and take it to the people. Let the rakyat know they are being used as pawns in Umno's political game. Let them know who is using such dirty tactics for political gain."
Expose Rozali's lavish lifestyle & cut his pay
Meanwhile, Rafizi unveiled a 'Cut Rozali Ismail's Pay' campaign, which he said was the only way to teach Rozali a lesson for not doing his job and "playing politics" instead.
"PKR will demand to cut RM10 mil from his pay and put into a fund that gives immediate relief to the affected residents. Why should Rozali deserve to earn M17.25 mil when he can't even solve such a simple problem (of the 4 pumps at Wangsa maju)," said Rozali.
According to the Puncak Niga Holdings Bhd annual report furnished by Rozali, it was stated that Rozali earned salary of RM8.255 mil, bonues of RM2.39 mil, benefits-in-kind of RM405,646, EPF RM1.777 mil, leave passage of RM663,582 and other expenses of RM3.754mil. This amounted to RM17.25mil for the year ended December 31, 2011.
Puncak Niaga is the holding company of SYABAS and Rozali's business flagship.
Rafizi also promised to put the "spotlight" on Rozali and expose his lavish and luxurious lifestyle.
"Let the people see how the Umno big shots enjoy while the struggle to carry water everyday. look at his sports cars, his houses, his children's wedding. It will be a eyeopener."
