KUANTAN, Jan 11 – Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Muslims today are facing challenges regarding the faith and position of Muslims as a result of issues raised pertaining to Islamic religion.
He said although Muslims in the country could be said to be among the successful Muslims in the world, they had to face a situation where there were groups who tried to raise sensitive issues on Islam.
“The challenges faced by Muslims in Malaysia are considerable although the national leadership always support the cause to empower Islam, but we realise that in our community there are various groups, leaderships and political bodies to the extent that they can politicise religion,” he said when addressing about 1,000 people after performing Friday prayer at Masjid Al-Makmur Batu 10, here today.
He expressed concern that such a situation had placed the Muslims in a rather chaotic situation and as such, the role of the ulama in the community must be harnessed to assist in clarifying the situation to all Muslims.
“Actually, many Muslims may have been confused and this represents a severe challenge that we are facing today. Nonetheless, efforts to give clarifications will be continued because the matter concerned the faiths of Muslims,” he said.
Muhyiddin said although Malaysia practised the system of parliamentary democracy where the people were free to express their views and opinions, this did not mean that an individual could create an issue that could split and confuse the Muslims.
“Whether the issue concerns politics or religion, it should be avoided and we should not create problems just because of political differences and so on,” he said.
He also called on all Muslims to play their role and continue to be united in ensuring that the integrity of Muslims was always safeguarded.
“Although Muslims are faced with numerous issues and challenges, we are still able to build self-resilience and national strength.
“That is why we should be thankful for the blessings of Allah that enable us in Malaysia to live in peace and prosperity,” he added. – Bernama
