Ali Rustam bowing out, Utusan speculates

As the period to submit nomination forms for Umno party election ends today, rumours are rife that former Malacca chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam may bow out from the vice-presidency fight.

Ali, 64, however, when contacted by Utusan Malaysia, neither confirmed nor denied the speculation which the Umno-owned daily claimed had popped up last week.

NONE"I have no comment, just wait tomorrow (today)," he told the daily.

Previously, it was reported that the Umno vice-president posts, currently held by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Shafie Apdal and Hishammuddin Hussein, will see a six-way fight.

This came about with the inclusion of Felda chairperson Isa Samad, Ali, who is also Permodalan Usahawan Nasional Bhd chairperson, and Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir (left), son of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
If Ali, known to be a Mahathir loyalist withdraws, it will seem like he is easing the way for Mukhriz in the already crowded tussle.

Meanwhile, however, a source had told The Star online that the former chief minister will indeed be contesting.

The source reported said that Ali is, in fact, enroute to Kuala Lumpur to file his nomination papers and is expected to reach the Putra World Trade Centre at 1pm.
