An Umno party official created a storm last night in a gathering of delegates when he claimed party president Najib Razak preferred the three incumbents vice presidents to win in the upcoming polls.
According to a report by The Malay Mail Online, the jovial gathering comprised of delegates from Federal Territory turned sour upon hearing the speech.
The three incumbents vice presidents namely Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishamuddin Hussein and Shafie Apdal are being challenged by Kedah Menteri Besar
Mukhriz Mahathir, former Malacca chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam and Felda chairman Isa Samad in a six-corner fight.
Before this, Zahid had advised vice-presidency aspirants to consult Najib before making a decision to contest.
In a report published by The Star, Zahid said the three incumbents had reached a “very comfortable” chemistry, and even went on to claim that both Najib and his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin were comfortable of having them as subordinates.
“I think our chemistry is at the level of ‘very comfortable’. We also feel that both the party president and deputy president are comfortable with us,” he was quoted saying.
How will Dr M react?
Did the Umno party official just spill out the ‘hints’ made by Zahid all along?
“If the party president wants the three incumbents returned, then he should speak to the delegates himself rather than getting the official to say it.
“And if this is so, what is the point of democracy and transformation and widening the voters’ base?” The Malay Mail Online quoted an anonymous delegate as saying.
The report went on to claim that “the incident has now spread to delegates in other states” and now Umno members are questioning Najib’s impartiality.
Now, what will Dr Mahathir Mohamed react to this sort of ‘campaigning’?
Mahathir yesterday reminded Umno delegates to choose wisely in the upcoming polls to prevent the party from becoming stupider.
He said present leaders hated people with higher intelligence to protect their positions.
“So what they do is recruit people who are more stupid than them. And when this leader dies, this someone who is more stupid than them, will take over. And when this one also dies?
"Now we have a party with three generations of such leaders. It is now a stupider party,” he quipped.
Earlier, Mahathir had called on Umno dinosaurs tainted with corruption to make way for younger leaders, saying it was the only that the Malay party could be saved from self-destructing.
