Activists Hishamuddin Rais and Adam Adli Abdul Halim have been arrested this evening, possibly in connection with the unfurling of the Sang Saka Malaya flag near Dataran Merdeka on the eve of Merdeka Day.
The matter was given prominent coverage by Mingguan Malaysia, the Sunday edition of Utusan Malaysia, which claimed in an editorial that Hishamuddin was "insolent" and a "threat to the nation".
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar (right) had told reporters yesterday that the police were investigating the matter.
When contacted, Hishamuddin told Malaysiakini that he and Adam were arrested while having dinner in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur to assist investigations under the Sedition Act 1948.
He was unable to confirm if the arrest had anything to do with his presence at Dataran Merdeka on Friday night.

The duo are currently held at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
Earlier, according to Bernama, the police have set up a team to investigate the flying of a self-made flag on the Merdeka eve, said Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh.
Investigation papers have also been opened over the incident, he said when contacted.
A Samad Said involved
Meanwhile, Dang Wangi police chief Zainuddin Ahmad said the case was being investigated under Section 4 (1) (b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for alleged incitement and Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code for alleged mischief.
"We will call the groups involved for their statements to be recorded," he told the news agency.
On a You Tube clip showing a man burst into the scene and grabbed a few flags from the group, he said the police had yet to identify the person involved.
Meanwhile, a number of reports had been lodged by various quarters against national laureate A Samad Said and Hishamuddin for being involved in the incident.
Ikatan Rakyat Insan Muslim Malaysia (IRIMM) and Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM) lodged their reports at the Sentul police station.
IRIMM president Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay said the incident hurt the feeling of the people.
In Alor Setar, Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir, who expressed his regret over the incident, said it showed those involved did not respect the country's history and the struggle of its founding fathers.
"The people should defend the flag, the Rukun Negara and any symbol which becomes a source of racial unity and patriotic spirit," he said at a function in conjunction with the Merdeka month in Bandar Muadzam Shah.
