I'm new blood too, argues Shahidan
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim agreed with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's statement that Umno needs younger members in the party, saying he himself is an example of "new blood".
"I agree with Tun (Mahathir), the old ones need to know their timing to leave, and the new ones need to know the timing to enter.
"Like me, I am a new blood," Shahidan told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday. He is vying for a seat in the Umno supreme council in the coming party polls.
However, the former Perlis MB, who is the minister in charge of parliamentary affairs, said that there should not be a complete overhaul of party leadership, insisting that any change must take place gradually.
"The old ones cannot leave en masse just like that. Then you don't know what the new ones stand for. Are they here for position, or are they here to be a patriot, who would put religion, race and country before their own interests?" he asked.
He said that Umno is also at fault for taking many nominations from its young members.
"It's also Umno's fault for taking too many memberships from the young ones. We need to know what they are fighting for," he added.
