Pak Samad's flag-flying act indecent, says DPM

National laureate A Samad Said’s alleged involvement in flying the Sang Saka Malaya flag during this year’s Merdeka Day eve celebrations is “indecent” and “shameful”, especially for a person of his standing, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

NONEMuhyiddin (left) said national symbols such as the Jalur Gemilang that is recognised to be representing Malaysians anywhere in the world should be respected.

“I don’t know what intention this national laureate has in flying the Sang Saka (Malaya). It can’t be that someone who is so respected and who has produced many major works of literature would do something so shameful.

“It is not that he is uneducated. He is, and better than us,” he said when giving his speech at Universiti Malaya today.

Muhyiddin was talking to over 2,000 students, mostly new intakes of the university who have just completed their orientation week today.
He urged the students not to be ashamed of flying the Jalur Gemilang and encouraged them to organise programmes that promote interracial harmony and nationalism, promising allocations for such programmes.

In addition, he quoted Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as saying at the last cabinet meeting that the Territorial Army (Wataniah) and Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) programmes at university campuses should be expanded to promote discipline and patriotism.

“This, for me, will become a guarantee for Malaysia's future that is peaceful and harmonious,” he said.
