Perkasa to gov't: Give out free Tanda Putera VCDs
Malay rights group Perkasa has proposed that the government buy the copyrights to the controversial Tanda Putera film and distribute them to the masses for free in the form of VCDs.
According to an Utusan Malaysia report today, Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said government-linked companies can foot the bill for the purchase of the film's copyrights.
Ali added the VCDs should then be distributed from house to house in conjunction with Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day.
"This is better than spending on buying fireworks and other entertainment activities that are overdone, and the younger generation cannot appreciate the history of independence.
"This will remind the rakyat about the adverse effects of the May 13, 1969 race riots," he was quoted as saying.
He added that the film should also be part of the National Service's training module.
Following the controversial release of the film for screening since cabinet last year decided to hold it off in the run up to the May 5 general election, there have been a rash of suggestions on how to spread the film.
This include turning it into a miniseries and including it as asubject in universities, despite reports that the film is drawing limp response at the box office.
Meanwhile opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said Penang was right to advise its cinemas not to screen the film, as it was more "propaganda" than an a factual portrayal of the historic riots.
