A witness in the inquest into the death of hawker Lim Chin Aik recounte how he saw a huge lightning arrester from Menara Umno in Penang crash onto a passing grey vehicle.
Khor Hun Hin, a durian seller along Jalan Macalister where the June incident took place, said he saw "with my own eyes" how the concrete beam fell from the top of the building onto the car.
Khor's durian stall is about 10m from the accident scene.
"Fifteen minutes after the incident, I told a policeman who was at the site that a car was buried beneath the crater when the incident occurred," said Khor.
"However, the police ignored me.”
Part of a car, a Honda City, was later found buried in a crater caused by the impact of the falling arrester.
"My van was also hit by the falling debris from the rooftop of the building, and I was also slightly injured.
"Before the incident, I was attending to a customer, a motorcyclist who was about to buy durians from me but he left when the weather changed," Khor told the Coroner's Court through an interpreter.
He said he lodged a report at the Jalan Pattani police station on the incident.
Khor, 61, said this when questioned by conducting officer Lim Cheah Yit during the inquest which started on Monday to determine Lim's death so that his family may be issued a death certificate for insurance claims.
Lim, 44, is believed to be buried beneath the crater although a four-day search by the authorities to retrieve his body failed.
