Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should order all cabinet ministers to start paying for the petrol they use, to show he is sincerely sorry for burdening the public with the latest fuel price hike from today.
Proposing this, PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli said some 70 ministers and high-ranking civil servants now receive free petrol and therefore would not understand why people gripe about the 20-sen hike in price for diesel and RON 95.
"Where is the fairness? If all of us have to shoulder this burden, this is the least that Najib could do ... so that the ministers will understand how it feels and we won't have any more 'smart' remarks from the ministers about the price hike," Rafizi said.
Najib had said the price hike would not hurt much after announcing what he said was the first step to remedy a ballooning government debt that has burdened Malaysia's economy.
Speaking to reporters at the PKR headquarters today, Rafizi issued two more challenges to the Najib government as a follow-up to the surprise fuel price hike, the first since December 2010.
He said Najib must now suspend price hikes on other essential items such as water, electricity and cooking oil for at least the next one year, and that Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (right)should be allowed to debate with him.
"I believe Khairy is ready to debate, unless the Umno president stops him," he said.
