Raw water: Johor to review Singapore deal

Based on the agreements in 1961 and 1962, Singapore purchased raw water from Johor at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons (4,546.09 litres) and sold to Johor, treated water at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons.
JOHOR BARU: Johor wants a review of the charges for raw water supply to Singapore which has not seen an increase for the past 52 years.
State Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman, Ir Hasni Mohamad said Johor wanted to increase its revenue and as such, was studying the water supply agreement with Singapore, Melaka and Syarikat Air Johor (SAJ).
He said each month, Johor received a payment of RM1.2 million from SAJ,  RM230,000 from the Melaka government and RM200,000 from the Public Utilities Board (PUB), Singapore for water supply.
Hasni said that based on the Malaysia-Singapore Agreement in 1961 and 1962, PUB purchased raw water from Johor at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons (4,546.09 litres)and sold the treated water at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons to Johor.
“Singapore receives 250 million gallons of raw water from us while we only receive 16 million gallons of treated water from Singapore per day.
“We have taken our arguments for an increase in the rate to the federal government, which will bring up the matter with Singapore,” he added.
Hasni was met after the signing of Syarikat Air Johor Holdings Sdn Bhd corporate integrity pledge at Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim, here, yesterday.
“We hope there’ll be no problem when Malaysia discusses the issue with Singapore, and the Johor government believes the issue can be resolved by the year-end,” he said.
